Military families are important to the Jacksonville community.
That’s why a new outreach program in Jacksonville, Serving Your Six Ministry, is helping to focus on the mental and emotional needs of service members and their families throughout the year.
“Serving Your Six Ministry seeks to give service members and their families a place to feel part of a community,” said Matthew Jackson, discipleship pastor at Trinity United Methodist Church of Jacksonville. “We are honored to serve our service members, as many of us are veterans of the military.”
The ministry’s goal is to help provide some assistance in carrying the burden military families can sometimes feel when a loved one is deployed.
“Our mission is to engage our local military community, walking with them and their families, as they carry the burden of sacrifice for their fellow man, woman and country,” said Georgie Stone, a member of Trinity UMC.
One of the new outreach programs is called a Deployed Spouses Dinner. The first one was held in November, and Serving Your Six Ministry will hold these dinners every fourth Monday of the month. The dinner is free for spouses, family members, or close friends of military members that are deployed.
“The Deployed Spouses Dinner provides a space where people facing the same life issues can fellowship freely with a free meal,” Jackson said.
During the dinner, childcare is provided so spouses, family and friends can relax and enjoy themselves. You can sign up for the dinner online at trinityumc-jax.org.
The next dinner will be help on Jan. 27 from 5-7 p.m. and those who would like to volunteer to serve dinner or help with the children’s activity can sign up at the website above.
Another outreach program put on by Serving Your Six Ministry is the Pocket Flag Project. The project will fold pocket-sized flags to give to deployed service members. The group is now asking for volunteers to help fold the flags that will be sent to the front line troops.
“Each flag contains a quote,” Stone said. “It reads: ‘A flag for your pocket so you can always carry a little piece of home. We are praying for you and we are proud of you. Thank you for defending our country and our freedom.’”
