Social media threats made over the weekend towards Swansboro Middle School have been found to be untrue, according to Onslow County Sheriff Chris Thomas.

A message was sent out to Swansboro Middle School families Sunday evening by Assistant Principal Jaime Bright, which said the school received information over the weekend about some social media posts that mentioned a potential threat to the school.

Bright’s message said they have been in contact with district staff and law enforcement, and while they have no evidence to suggest there is any danger to Swansboro Middle, additional law enforcement would be on campus Monday out of an abundance of caution.

Both Thomas and Onslow County Schools Chief Communications Officer Brent Anderson confirmed Monday that the threats were investigated and found to be not valid. Thomas added that no charges were brought forth.

OCSO posted on Facebook Monday afternoon that they successfully identified the person involved, determining there is no credible threat of violence to Swansboro Middle.

The alleged threatening post did not pose any imminent danger to the school or its students, the post added.

“Ensuring the safety and security of our schools is a top priority for the sheriff’s office,” Thomas said in the post. “All reports of potential threats are taken seriously and addressed accordingly.”
